At Walton Glass, we get asked about what secruity features you should look out for when considering new double-glazed windows. There are several key features to look out for:

Multi-Point Locking Systems

Multi-point locks are a crucial security feature in modern double glazed windows. These systems typically have 3-5 locking points around the frame, creating a strong seal that significantly hampers break-in attempts. The multiple locking points distribute the force of any attempted forced entry, making it much more difficult for intruders to gain access.

Internal Beading
Internal beading is now standard in most modern double glazed windows. This feature means the beading strips that hold the glass in place are located on the inside of the frame. As a result, the glass unit is securely fastened from within your home, making it impossible for intruders to remove the glass from the outside without breaking it.

Reinforced Frames
Many high-quality double glazed windows feature reinforced frames, often made with galvanised steel. These sturdy frames provide additional strength and durability, making it more challenging for intruders to force the window open.

Laminated or Toughened Glass
For extra security, look for windows that use laminated or toughened glass. Laminated glass consists of multiple layers bonded together, making it highly resistant to breaking. Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is heat-treated to increase its strength and is much harder to break than standard glass.

Key-Lockable Handles
Windows with key-lockable handles offer an additional layer of security. Even if an intruder manages to break the glass, they won’t be able to open the window without the key.

Shoot Bolts
Many double glazed windows incorporate shoot bolts at the top and bottom of the frame. These heavy-duty metal bolts provide extra fastening points, further securing the window in place.

Child Restrictors
While primarily a safety feature, child restrictors can also enhance security by limiting how far the window can be opened.

Easy Escape Hinges
For safety in emergencies, look for windows with easy escape hinges. These allow the window to be quickly opened to a 90-degree angle from the inside, providing a safe exit route if needed.

By choosing double glazed windows with these security features, you can significantly enhance the protection of your home against potential intruders while also improving energy efficiency and comfort.
